Given the racial landscape of the US in recent months surrounding the decisions in both the Michel Brown and Eric Garner cases, RESPOND which is currently on view in Brooklyn at Smack Mellon, really gets at the heart of the matter. Smack Mellon organized the show given the public response to the controversial verdict in the grand jury decision not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Garner. Garner was killed on July 17th in Staten Island when a New York City police officer put him in a choke hold.
Smack Mellon directors Kathleen Gilrain and Suzanne Kim, changed their exhibition schedule to accommodate this show. The show features the work of two hundred artists and the gallery received over six hundred submissions for the exhibition. The 200 pieces of art fill the Smack Mellon space to an overwhelming capacity. Almost every square inch of the gallery is being occupied by a work of art. Many of the works are displayed salon style in the two story high gallery space. The works in the RESPOND show are diverse and feature a range of artists and mediums including video, sculpture, installation, photography and even textile work.

Given the show's theme and the overwhelming response to the call for work, the pieces featured in the exhibition are on point. “Science, Fiction” is the latest show of video artist Diana Thater on view at David Zwirner's 533 West 19th street space. Thater who is one of the most influential artists working in film, video and installation today, has transformed the Zwirner gallery into a multimedia experience. Drawing on Thater's larger body of work which explores the interplay between mediated experiences and the natural world, “Science, Fiction” offers a fresh take on this subject matter.
Thater who is no stranger to the art world, earned her BFA in Art History from New York University. She would go onto pursue an M.F.A at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. This is her eighth solo exhibition at Zwirner and her work as also been shown internationally. In the fall of 2015, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will be hosting a mid career survey of Thater's work.
The show consists of two video pieces and an installation which take over the second half of the Zwirner gallery space. As you enter the space, The Starry Messenger and Sidereus Nuncius are shown on two large flat screen video pieces facing one another against opposite walls and give way to Thater's installation in the larger gallery space. The video work as well as the installation explore tension between the natural and constructed world.

Art for Progress Announces Artists to be Shown at Fountain Art Fair

Art for Progress, Fountain Art Fair’s non-profit partner for NY Art Week, has announced the artists it will be presenting for both the Fair and the March 10th after party. Additionally, the organization will be showing work from the most promising student artists participating in its city-wide arts education program.
Art for Progress (AFP) is a New York non-profit dedicated to helping emerging artists through its many culturally diverse art events and providing arts education to underserved youth in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Bronx with dynamic programming that promotes reflection and self-expression.
As part of its collaboration with Fountain Art Fair, AFP will be showing the work of twenty international artists whose work includes painting, photography, digital, video and sculpture. Artwork from AFP’s student artists from grades nine through twelve will also be exhibited. In conjunction with its visual arts offerings, Art for Progress will feature DJs, live musical performances, and performance art pieces throughout the show’s dates within its gallery space.
Fountain Art Fair takes place March 9-11 at the historic 69th armory located at 68 Lexington Avenue on the corner of 25th Street. General hours on Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 are from 1–7pm. Tickets are $10 for daily passes and $15 weekend passes.

New York City 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization, Art for Progress (AFP) will bring its support and celebration of equality during NYC's Gay Pride Weekend, with "Artists 4 Equality" June 28th through 30th, 4-11pm. The organization's second annual music and arts festival will take place at Solar One Park, located in Manhattan on the East River at 23rd Street. Featuring live bands, DJ's, performance and installation art, along with great food, beer and wine, it will be a top destination during NYC's Pride Weekend.
Solar One Park is the perfect outdoor summer venue for the festival which will kick off on Friday evening June 28th. The opening night will feature live music performances from some of the most exciting emerging artists in NYC including the super talented Ellis Ashbrook, while Saturday's focus will shift to DJ and electronic music culture with DJ/Producer Hector Romero headlining the evening. On Sunday, NYC Cielo resident DJ/Producer Tedd Patterson will headline the night as both live music and DJ's share the stage. Cutting edge performance and installation art will be featured all three days as we turn the park into a virtual adult playground of art & music.
