  • Lola Star: Helping to Make Brooklyn a Better Place

  • Within recent years, Brooklyn has become a place that many artists have flocked to. One such artist is Dianna Carlin, who has been active within the Brooklyn arts scene since 2000. Carlin who is better known as Lola Star, has become a local celebrity through her popular Lola Star's Dreamland Roller Disco. Dreamland Roller Disco first opened in 2010 and combined Carlin's love of rollerskating and the glamor of Coney Island for a wide audience to enjoy. However, the skating rink sadly closed in 2010. After four years of searching for new location, Dreamland recently reopened in Prospect Park's Lakeside Rink. Each Friday Lola Star will host themed skating parties in the new location. This week's party will be based on the 1980 film "Xanadu” staring Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly and Michael Beck. With more dance parties on the horizon, Carlin is “excited” to have Dreamland up and running again. The skate parties are scheduled to go through the end of August but Carlin hopes to offer more parties in fall and winter months. I recently spoke with Carlin about how she got the name Lola Star, how she has adapted to the changing face of Brooklyn and what role community activism has played within her work. Carlin got the nickname because, “I use to skate around my parent's basement listening to Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana' on repeat and dreamed of being a rollerskating star.   • "Mixed Greens" on the Menu Saturday Night at The Paper Box

  • Ellis Ashbrook, Idgy Dean, Liquid Sound Lounge, Caridad Sola to Perform It's been a true pleasure bringing together so many great artists over the past few months for our Mixed Greens events at The Paper Box.  There really is an immense amount of talent in our city, and we're here to share it with you. With that said, to kick off the fall season, we're bringing you the biggest and best Mixed Greens party yet.  Ellis Ashbrook, Idgy Dean, and Heavy Birds are set to perform on the main stage while the garden will be in full dance party mode with LSL's Jeannie Hopper, TONY's Bruce Tantum, Sal Leone and AFP resident DJ Gatto.  And what will Caridad Sola come up with to engage, entice, or shock us with her latest performance piece? If that's not enough for you, Daniel Maldonado of Gashouse Films will be taking the night off from his feature film production to surprise us with some live video creations. Brooklyn based progressive, exploratory rock band Ellis Ashbrook will headline our live music performances on Saturday night.  We've had this date marked on our calendar for a while now as Ellis Ashbrook is known for amazing live performances.   • Performance Schedule for Saturday Night at The Paper Box

  • Excitement is building for AFP's tasty menagerie of music & art at the super cool Paper Box this Saturday night.  Otherwise known as Mixed Greens, it happens every third Saturday of the month. In our last post we shared some late information about the participating artists. Here's the schedule.. 9:00pm - El Pueblo 10:00pm - Muj 11:00pm - The Coffin Daggers in the garden: Sindy Butz performance piece 12:00am - DJ set - Elliot Dehoyos Caridad Sola performance piece Throughout the evening, in the garden, we'll feature a video installation created by filmmaker Scott Nyerges. Between live music sets, Gatto will be spinning a fun, eclectic mix of  tunes to keep you hopping around. Come out and support AFP's mission, the artists and this great new venue!   • "Mixed Greens" returns to The Paper Box, Saturday, August 25th

  • Mixed Greens returns this month with a new date, but you can expect the same fresh, diverse music, brilliant performance art and thought-provoking video installations you've come to expect at AFP events.  Plus,  The Paper Box is in the coolest neighborhood in Brooklyn and the tacos can't be beat! What more can you ask for on a Saturday night? Our original opening band for the evening, The Disappointment have another commitment, but El Pueblo has been added to the ticket.  They're a fantastic reggae, dub band (latin and jazz influences) who are known for their powerful performances.  We are sure El Pueblo will get the night started properly. Not walking the line between na trapeze, epic-symphonica, and electropunk, the music duo Muj is a mish-mash of musical styles.  In their performances, they are known for playful improvisations and unexpected intense instrumentations. Muj segues seamlessly from ferocious, soaring guitar jams to moving melodic departures. They are now working on a feature-length documentary including an original soundtrack. When The Coffin Daggers take the stage, get ready for an all out assault on your senses.   • As we approach AFP's big festival this coming weekend at the Paper Box, here is more info and site links for the live music you will be hearing. Sponsor eMusic will be there with up-to-the-minute tweets and social media reporting from their Editor in Chief, Joe Edward Keyes. You can see their Youtube channel for the fest HERE. The Paper Box will also be streaming the event live through their site. As we will be hosting some of the best emerging musical talent to be found in NYC, we will also have the honor of hosting some esteemed, well-established bands that you do not want to miss! Kicking off the 3-day festival on Friday, NYC's El Pueblo will perform their reggae, soul-infused music. Redheadphone will follow, with their funky, positive vibe. As the evening gets into full swing, School ov Thought will perform their blend of hip hop/reggae/acoustic, thought provoking sounds. Later in the evening, Push Method will take to the stage with their high energy level. Just after midnight, the last live music performance on Friday is by Brooklyn-based Argotec, with a heavy hitting blend of rap, techno, and rock. The evening will continue to the wee hours, when the DJs take to the decks.   • Save the Date: "Brooklyn Beat" Music & Arts Festival June 1-3

  • Art For Progress is gearing up for an exciting weekend of music, art, film and fashion! The action will all go down in East Williamsburg at Paper Box. The festival will coincide with Bushwick Open Studios, so don't miss it. A few of the confirmed live musical acts are Lachi & Meridian Gold,  Comandante Zero, Push Method, Argotec, Redheadphone, and Inky Glass. Jon Samson of CoCreative Music will perform a special set for kids of all ages on Sunday. Confirmed DJs are Brooklyn fave, Punches, Jeannie Hopper (Liquid Sound Lounge), Kervyn Mark (Melting Pot), Bruce Tantum (Time Out NY), Gatto, Jimmy Sky, Bass Control, Brett from Boundless, DJ Jago and Sal Leone. Gashouse Films will host an intriguing selection of films Sunday evening, while artist Caridad Sola  curates performance art for the weekend festivities. AFP will transform the outdoor space at Paper Box into a garden of art installations from artists Max Greis, Jeanne Wilkinson and others. Additionally, fashion designers Iliana Quander, Tom Sohung, Paula Collins, Alicia P, Akilah Stewart of Sweet-n-Salty, and Allyson Jacobs will bring design to life with interactive fashion installations.
