  • Art for Progress is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York City that provides dynamic artistic programming to under-served youth. The organization's arts initiative became official in 2008 when teaching artists began residencies in New York City public schools. Art for Progress' arts education programs supplement and, in many cases, replace arts education programs that have been cut from New York City public schools due to lack of funding.  Art for Progress' summer program is one of their most notable achievements. The program is designed to mentor young aspiring creatives interested in pursuing a profession in art, fashion design, music, or film. The 2023 summer program was full of highlights, with ambitious projects led to outstanding results. Collaborative projects brought exceptional experiences for budding artists, while special guest artists played an important role for others. At the Lorge School, Art for Progress purchased musical instruments that will bring a renewed music program this fall.  Everyone at Art for Progress is very proud of what’s been achieved over the last 6 years, and its bittersweet knowing that next year will be their last year. They set out in May with an ambitious goal of finding students across NYC who could benefit the most from their summer program. They brought posters and flyers to art, music, and fashion schools in the boroughs, hoping to connect with students who were willing to spend some of their precious time off in the s[...]

  • Frank Jackson Founder and Executive Director Frank Jackson, Founder and Director of Art For Progress (AFP), is an entrepreneur, businessman, DJ and music producer. Frank is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. After moving to NYC from Washington D.C. in early 1997, he immersed himself in the culture and diversity of the city. During this time, Frank had the opportunity to meet many artistic people including visual artists, musicians, fashion designers, and the like. He realized that most of them, though extremely talented, were not very successful. In knowing many talented artists, and understanding the struggles they endured, he set out to create a truly “outside the box”, multi- faceted organization that could achieve many positive results for both the artists and his community: he saw an opportunity to apply his business knowledge in the arts world. With the launch of AFP's art education program in 2006, the organization's programs were set and Franks focus shifted to fulfilling AFP's mission. Through the years, Art For Progress has provided opportunities and valuable resources for many gifted artists and arts programming for hundreds of NYC public school students. Today, Frank continues to shape this prospering organization's vision and development.   Barry Komitor Arts Education Coordinator Our Arts Education Coordinator, Barry Komitor is an artist and musician living in Brooklyn. • PHILOSOPHY While public schools in New York City have been working hard to meet federal and state mandates for student test scores, arts education programs have become scarce. At Art for Progress, it is our mission to reverse this trend by delivering quality Arts Education programs to the students of New York City’s public schools. Our programs are designed and implemented by professional educators and teaching artists who have a wealth of experience in arts education in public schools and community-based after school programs. In addition, Art for Progress works closely with teachers and administrators at client schools to design programs for students that deepen their understanding of core subject areas. Through arts education, students make connections between material covered in class and their community; they will explore other cultures and examine human experience from a variety of perspectives and artistic forms. In 2008 the our Arts Initiative became official when teaching artists began residencies in New York City public schools. The first beneficiaries of this innovative program were Landmark High School in Manhattan and Shorefront Y After- School Stars @ PS 225. At Landmark High our artist in residence designed a weekly visual arts elective for students in grades 9 and 10. In addition, AFP developed a multidisciplinary arts and humanities curriculum that worked in conjunction with Landmark’s Global Studies program. The purpose of this curriculum was to provide st[...]
