Art for Progress to host Michael Alan’s Living Installation

New York City Non Profit to host Michael Alan’s “Living Installation” Friday, November 9th at ABC NORIO

Art for Progress (AFP), a NYC 501C (3) nonprofit, is proud to announce its hosting artist Michael Alan’s “Living Installation, Family Misfit Healing” on Friday, November 9th   at ABC NORIO in NYC’s Lower East Side.

The epic art performance piece which has been featured in The Huffington Post, Marie Claire, Gothamist, Hyperallergic and many others, is the creative genius of artist Michael Alan. As described by Alan, The Living Installation Project is a human activist art mission. The main goal is reinforcing that humans are living installations by creating a space for people to open up, come together and are all equal through the process of creating art.

After 8 years of creating performance art, Michael Alan was recently severely injured and suffered major spinal damage as well as a concussion. His injuries have affected his ability to walk and perform.

Despite his physical challenges, the Living Installation Project will return November 9th @ ABC NORIO for a special 8 hour healing show.

Family Misfit Healing: No matter how different and odd we all might be we all have the power to heal. Alan while healing after intense spinal surgery will team up with 7 performers to create a world based on acceptance and growth. A strong dynamic family portrait will be born, created from scratch. The 8 hour mega show, a true experience/happening, will be an escape where guests can do whatever they choose to do. The space will start with nothing, Alan seated will build a world around him, from start to finish with an 8 person tablo, nude and then dressed with everything under the sun, birthed and animated with pure emotion.

Prerecorded music collaborations with Ariel Pink, Meredith Monk, Geneva Jucuzzi, Japanther, Jello Biafra, The Krays, Japanther, Odd Nosdam, Vas Deferens Organisation, R. Stevie Moore, Walter Steding, Neke Carson, Kenny Scharf, Jeff and Jane Hudson and so many more

It’s a happening, come have fun, watch, get lost in the creation, hang, draw, write, create, come and go as you want, be a part of it!

Michael Alan

For Michael Alan, art is a combination of harmonious opposites, close observation, catharsis, a means of communication and a radical juxtaposition of dimensional elements. He challenges everything: concepts of figure, composition, media and movement, including his own. Exploring the ambiguity of time and history, Alan’s work focuses on crossbreeding and the relationship of destruction and creation.

Alan was born in the summer of 1977, during the New York City blackout. His work has been featured in 5 New York solo shows and over 200 group shows. His work has been discussed in over 200 publications, books and media sources, including the New York Times, NBC’s Today Show, Marie Claire Italia, Art+Auction, the New York Post, Fox Channel 5, the Village Voice’s “Best in Show”, Time Out New York, Hyperallergic, Curbs and Stoops, and Cacao Magazine.

Art for Progress

Art For Progress (AFP) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization committed to the cultivation and support of emerging artists working in diverse genres: the visual arts, fashion, music, film, and new media. Based in New York City, AFP seeks to increase the visibility of talented artists, to raise the awareness of the importance of arts education in public schools, and to support those same arts through its arts education program.

—————————————————————

“Alan’s work and style of organizing his installations and exhibits is unarguably infused with his years of work as an outsider-artist, his passion for expression, his years of promoting music, and his love of collaboration.” – Huffington Post

“The Living Installation brings everyone from artists sketching to club kids to the wealthiest gallery owner to a kid from the projects.  Much like Keith Haring drawing with chalk on the subway posters, Michael Alan’s Living Installation is all about accessibility of art.”  – Crudo Magazine

“I am Michael Alien, an alien who wants good and to exist with a twist of chaos and a big splash of toxic paint!”— Art Info

“Mixed Greens” on the Menu Saturday Night at The Paper Box

Ellis Ashbrook, Idgy Dean, Liquid Sound Lounge, Caridad Sola to Perform

It’s been a true pleasure bringing together so many great artists over the past few months for our Mixed Greens events at The Paper Box.  There really is an immense amount of talent in our city, and we’re here to share it with you.

With that said, to kick off the fall season, we’re bringing you the biggest and best Mixed Greens party yet.  Ellis Ashbrook, Idgy Dean, and Heavy Birds are set to perform on the main stage while the garden will be in full dance party mode with LSL’s Jeannie Hopper, TONY’s Bruce Tantum, Sal Leone and AFP resident DJ Gatto.  And what will Caridad Sola come up with to engage, entice, or shock us with her latest performance piece? If that’s not enough for you, Daniel Maldonado of Gashouse Films will be taking the night off from his feature film production to surprise us with some live video creations.

Brooklyn based progressive, exploratory rock band Ellis Ashbrook will headline our live music performances on Saturday night.  We’ve had this date marked on our calendar for a while now as Ellis Ashbrook is known for amazing live performances. The bands latest album, Meridia, garnered an 8 out of 10 rating by Music Connection Magazine Check out some of their videos and music.  The super-talented Idgy Dean, the solo project of Brooklynite Lindsay Sandwald, will also take the stage on Saturday. Lindsay who was invited to perform her haunted rhythm-driven pop songs at The Deli’s B.E.A.F (Best of Emerging Artists Fest) is a regular at the best NYC music venues. Opening up the night of live music, we have the hypnotic, psychedelic Brooklyn band Heavy Birds. Local media  have compared the band to such well-known bands as The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Velvet Underground. They recently released Mary/Moon, a 7″ limited edition vinyl record that can be purchased at local NYC record stores.  To close out the summer season, we’ve asked Them Damn Ninjas to play a special late night set (12:30am) of kick ass rock n’ roll.

For this months event, we’ve decided to turn the garden into a full-on dance party. It’s still warm! Why not take advantage of the remaining warm weather?  We’re bringing in a kick-ass sound system, some lights and some excellent DJ’s who will keep you grooving all night long.  At the top of the list we have Liquid Sound Lounge’s Jeannie Hopper who has an endless record collection. She’s sure to drop a wide range of new, classic and rare grooves as she arrives after the LSL radio show on WBAI 99.5.  TONY’s Bruce Tantum will also be in the house and he’s sure to bring some quality deep and techy tracks that will keep your body moving. AFP event goers are very familiar with DJ vets Sal Leone and Gatto. It all shapes up to be an exceptional night of music in the splendid graffiti art splashed garden at The Paper Box.

As the clock strikes midnight, Caridad Sola will present her latest performance piece for our guests. To date, she’s brought us the exceptional Deliver us from Eve il, El Paradon, All that Glitters is not Gold among others. We can only imagine what Saturday will bring.

In terms of surprises, award winning Filmmaker Daniel Maldonado has something creative in mind for Saturday night. Daniel has been hard at work producing his first feature film, H.O.M.E and we’re thrilled that he is part of our Mixed Greens series.

We hope you can join us. The Paper Box, 17 Meadow Street, Brooklyn, NY

“Mixed Greens” returns to The Paper Box, Saturday, August 25th

Mixed Greens returns this month with a new date, but you can expect the same fresh, diverse music, brilliant performance art and thought-provoking video installations you’ve come to expect at AFP events.  Plus,  The Paper Box is in the coolest neighborhood in Brooklyn and the tacos can’t be beat!

What more can you ask for on a Saturday night?

Our original opening band for the evening, The Disappointment have another commitment, but El Pueblo has been added to the ticket.  They’re a fantastic reggae, dub band (latin and jazz influences) who are known for their powerful performances.  We are sure El Pueblo will get the night started properly.

Not walking the line between na trapeze, epic-symphonica, and electropunk, the music duo Muj is a mish-mash of musical styles.  In their performances, they are known for playful improvisations and unexpected intense instrumentations. Muj segues seamlessly from ferocious, soaring guitar jams to moving melodic departures. They are now working on a feature-length documentary including an original soundtrack.

When The Coffin Daggers take the stage, get ready for an all out assault on your senses. A staple on the New York live music scene,  The Coffin Daggers forge a new sound that will both overwhelm and delight the senses. The NY based surf-punk, instrumental rock band has released a full length album  and two singles to critical acclaim.

The super-talented, creative, architect, performance artist Caridad Sola has rightfully become the resident performance artist for Mixed Greens, and with each stunning performance Caridad explores a broad range of social and cultural subject matter. During her last performance a young man (photo below) was so enthralled by her performance that he decided he wanted to be a part of it.  As he began to crawl toward the large tub of gold liquid, he slowly removed his clothing.

Also performing at our August 25th event is the very talented, Sindy Butz. Sindy is a Berlin based visual and performance artist who is currently residing in New York City. Her work is influenced by social and cultural Anthropology studies, Moral- Philosophy and Spiritual Work.

Our video installation for our August event will feature the work of filmmaker, photographer Scott Nyerges. His video work has been shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Scott’s work has been featured at several AFP events and we’re very happy to be featuring his work on August 25th.

Flying in from L.A. to perform at Mixed Greens is DJ/Producer Elliot Dehoyos. Elliot is an excellent DJ who currently spins at his monthly Tribe party in L.A. and hosts his weekly internet radio show by the same name.  We’re sure he’ll bring his best when he gets on the decks at The Paper Box.

AFP’s Founder & Director is also a DJ in the NYC underground dance music scene.     Gatto spins a regular monthly gig on Montreal’s Techno.fm and is currently honing his production skills. In the past, he’s shared the decks with such greats as Derrick Carter, Josh Wink, Charles Webster and many more. Frank is the resident DJ for the Mixed Greens events and promises to bring in top talent each month.
